Alhaurín el Grande
A working Andalusian town under the Sierra de Mijas, 25 minutes over the hill from Fuengirola.
Alhaurín el Grande sits on the southern edge of the Guadalhorce valley with the Sierra de Mijas at its back, about 27,500 people, and a life of its own that has nothing to do with tourism. The old centre is properly Andalusian, with the Thursday market at the fairground, seven pharmacies, two state secondaries and a health centre. Fuengirola is 20 km over the A-387, which in normal traffic is about 25 minutes.
It suits buyers who want a house with ground, a pool or a bit of campo within half an hour of the beach and the airport, and who would rather live among Spaniards than in a resort. It suits golfers too: Alhaurín Golf is in the municipality. It's less suited to anyone who wants to walk to the sea, or who wants to manage without a car.

The parts that aren't in the brochure.
Plenty of the housing around the town is campo property on rustic land. Some of it was built without a licence and can only be tolerated, not legalised, through the AFO route under Title VIII of Ley 7/2021. Have a lawyer check the status before you go near a price.
The town hall has warned publicly that even a prefabricated or mobile home on rustic land needs a municipal building licence, and that breaches bring fines, demolition orders and referral to the prosecutor.
The town has a planning-corruption past: the Supreme Court upheld bribery convictions against a former mayor and a planning councillor who demanded €122,000 from a builder for a licence. It's history, but it's why paperwork here deserves a careful eye.
You're not at the beach. Fuengirola is 20 km over the sierra, about 25 minutes, and longer on a summer Sunday.
There's no train. The bus network is decent and there's a direct bus to the hospital, but plan on a car.
